Customers Willing to Wait Over 40 Minutes Just to Check Out at His Register
ACWORTH, Georgia — Michael Masterangelo, 29, a cashier at the Publix supermarket in Acworth, has become such a beloved figure among customers that they are willing to wait over 40 minutes just to check out at his register.
"I love my job. Every day I'm happy to be here. I know hundreds of people. I look forward to talking to customers and friends. We talk about basketball and all sorts of things," Masterangelo shared.
Store manager Countney McGuiness described Masterangelo as "a light" for the supermarket: "He brings positive energy every day, making it more enjoyable to work and shop here. He's always smiling, very proud, and dedicated to his job. People from the area come to hug and greet him. He always goes above and beyond what's expected."
Over a Decade-Long Journey at Publix
Masterangelo, who has autism, began working at Publix over 12 years ago. Since then, he has gradually attracted a growing loyal customer base thanks to his enthusiastic and friendly personality.
"I talk to everyone when they check out. I ask about them and their families. I get to know them, and they get to know me better too. Every time we meet again, we catch up on each other's lives," he recounted.
Nearly $32,000 Raised for Special Olympics in Just 6 Days
Masterangelo has participated in the Special Olympics program since childhood. During his time at Publix, he regularly encourages customers to donate to the organization.
During Publix's Special Olympics fundraising drive last January, the donation bucket at Masterangelo's register filled up in just six days, with the total amount raised reaching nearly $32,000.
"I can't believe I did that," he said with pride.
Community Shows Special Love for the Cashier
Local customers told 11 Alive that they support Masterangelo because of the kindness he shows them every day. Outside of work, he plays basketball, soccer, and flag football as part of the Special Olympics. Many customers regularly come to cheer him on at his games.
Dana Peshel, Masterangelo's mother, expressed immense pride: "It means so much. My son brings light to everyone." She shared that she no longer worries because her son receives so much love from both his family and the community.
Dream of Appearing in a Publix Commercial
Masterangelo stated that he hopes to continue working at Publix until he retires. His biggest dream is to appear in an official Publix commercial to tell everyone how much he loves the store and this community.
"I want everyone to know how much I love the store, the community, and everyone who loves and supports me. It makes me feel so special," he said.
