A wave of outrage is spreading across social media following the appearance of several edited images showing people posing next to the grave of teenager Austin Metcalf, with added effects designed to appear disrespectful to the victim's resting place.
These posts emerged just days after Karmelo Anthony, 19, was convicted of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet in Texas in 2025.
Many posts included hashtags such as “#FreeKarmeloAnthony” and messages expressing support for Anthony. These images quickly went viral across multiple social media platforms, drawing a wave of criticism from the online community and the victim's family.
According to media reports, the images were digitally altered to create false effects and do not depict actual behavior at the cemetery. Nevertheless, many still view the content as disrespecting Austin Metcalf's memory and causing further grief to the victim's family.
Austin Metcalf, 17, died in April 2025 after an altercation with Karmelo Anthony at a high school track meet in Texas. Prosecutors stated that Anthony stabbed Metcalf in the chest after a physical confrontation.
On June 10, 2026, a jury found Anthony guilty of first-degree murder. The court sentenced him to 35 years in prison. Anthony has filed notice of his intent to appeal the conviction.
The case has garnered national attention in the United States, particularly as debates concerning race, the justice system, and the trial process have played out intensely on social media.
Austin Metcalf's family has not yet made any public comment regarding the recently circulated images.
