A former Georgia church leader has been sentenced to 25 years in prison without parole for crimes related to the sexual abuse of a minor. The defendant is Marcus Kendall Turner, who previously served in a management role at Worship with Wonders church in Cobb County. Following the verdict, the victim's mother spoke out about the pain and permanent changes her family has faced since the incident.

According to records from the Cherokee County District Attorney, the abuse began in 2023 after Turner invited a middle school boy to join the church's new youth group. For months, he spent private time with the boy to commit wrongful acts, reminiscent of cases involving allegations of relationships with students that have sparked public outcry. The mother stated she only learned of the incident when church leadership invited her in and Turner directly admitted to his actions.

The heartbroken mother shared that her family had been active in the church since 2020 and her son used to love the environment. She placed absolute trust in Turner due to his spiritual leadership role in the community.

"I trusted him, I trusted the pastors because he was a leader in the church. I never thought this could happen in such a place,"
she emphasized regarding this betrayal of trust.

A Severe Verdict and the Journey to Recovery

At the trial, the mother affirmed that the 25-year sentence provided legal closure, but the process of emotional recovery for her son remains long, especially since young children's psyches are highly vulnerable, as seen in the shooting involving children in DeKalb County. Currently, the victim is focusing on his studies but has become withdrawn and hesitant to return to a church setting. Although she chooses to forgive, she still hopes Turner will truly repent for the trauma he caused during his time in prison.

Regarding Worship with Wonders church, the organization stated they were satisfied with the court's verdict after remaining silent for a period to respect the investigation. According to information from the church, Turner worked there part-time in an administrative role from 2017 to 2021. Currently, in addition to the sentence he just received, Turner is still facing additional charges in Cobb County, which also recently recorded a serious traffic accident in Cobb County lately.

The case serves as a profound warning to parents about supervising their children even in environments considered safest. The Vietnamese community in Georgia should take note and remain vigilant to protect minors from the risks of abuse, similar to the case of a man accused of raping a student at the University of Georgia. The severity of the law in this case demonstrates the Georgia state government's efforts to punish crimes targeting children.
