MONETA, Virginia – One person was killed and 22 others were injured on Friday evening, June 12, 2026, after a large tent unexpectedly collapsed during an outdoor ceremony celebrating a church's 20th anniversary in Moneta, Virginia.
Bedford County officials stated that a severe thunderstorm cell passed through the area just before the incident, bringing heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds. The extreme weather conditions caused the tent structure to become unstable and collapse onto the crowd attending the ceremony.
According to authorities, 11 people were transported to the hospital for treatment, while another 11 received first aid at the scene.
Pastor Troy Keaton of East Lake Community Church shared on social media:
“Our church family suffered a great tragedy tonight after the outdoor tent collapsed during our 20th-anniversary celebration.”
He added:
“Just as I stepped onto the stage to announce for everyone to return to their cars, a strong gust of wind suddenly lifted the tent.”
Officials confirmed that the tent had been inspected and approved by the Bedford County Building Inspection Department on Tuesday prior to the event. However, the severe thunderstorm that occurred on Friday evening caused the structure to be unable to withstand the wind and collapse.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the detailed cause of the incident.
