One person was killed following a massive fireworks explosion at a home in the Jefferson Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles, which forced firefighters and bomb squads to cordon off the scene for hours.
According to Los Angeles officials, the explosion occurred inside a detached garage of a house located on 9th Avenue.
Video footage from the scene shows:
large flames engulfing the area,
while numerous fireworks continued to detonate in the sky amidst the blaze.
Officials stated that the pyrotechnics found at the scene appeared to be high-powered mortar-style fireworks.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD):
one person was found dead,
two others were injured.
Firefighters brought the fire under control at approximately 5:52 a.m.
During the scene processing, police had to call in the bomb squad for assistance after discovering:
“a large quantity of fireworks”
inside the house.
At one point, authorities also deployed search dogs to check for any potentially missing persons in the area.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) along with arson investigators are currently investigating the cause of the fire and:
“the possibility of criminal activity”
related to the incident.
Nearby homes were temporarily evacuated to allow authorities to handle the remaining hazardous materials.
According to Realtor.com, the house is valued at approximately $1.3 million with:
4 bedrooms,
and 2 bathrooms.
Los Angeles officials reiterated that:
all types of fireworks are prohibited within city limits,
including “safe and sane” varieties such as sparklers or fountains.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department also stated that:
storing,
manufacturing,
selling,
or using unlicensed fireworks
are illegal acts in many areas throughout Los Angeles County.
