Bulldog unexpectedly attacks toddler during diaper change
HALLANDALE, Florida — A 1-year-old boy was severely attacked by the family's American Bulldog while his mother was changing his diaper at their home on Friday afternoon, according to the Hallandale Police Department.
The incident occurred at a house in Hallandale, about 20 miles north of Miami. The 6-year-old American Bulldog suddenly lunged at the child when the mother briefly turned away.
The father stated that his wife heard growling before the dog attacked. She immediately pulled the baby away from the dog's jaws but was also bitten while struggling to protect her child.
Toddler airlifted to hospital
The boy sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a nearby children's hospital. Local media images showed the distraught mother running after the stretcher as paramedics rushed the baby into the emergency room.
According to the family, doctors expect the boy to make a full recovery.
Dog euthanized
The dog was surrendered to Broward County Animal Care and was euthanized on Saturday.
The father stated that the animal had never exhibited any aggressive behavior before. Neighbors also described the dog as gentle and expressed their sadness over the incident.
Child safety warning
Officials reminded parents to always closely supervise young children around pets, even familiar family animals, as unexpected reactions can occur at any time.
The incident is currently under investigation by Hallandale police.
