LOS ANGELES – A large fire beneath the 110 Freeway in the Wilmington area is causing traffic chaos in Los Angeles as several northbound lanes have been closed indefinitely.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire broke out on the night of May 4 beneath an overpass near the Port of Los Angeles.

Officials believe the fire originated from a homeless encampment under the bridge.

Southbound lanes were reopened on the morning of May 5, but the northbound section from Harry Bridges Boulevard to Channel Street remains blocked for structural safety inspections.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) stated that engineering crews are assessing the impact of high temperatures on the concrete, steel, and bridge beams.

Images from the scene show a large amount of burnt materials, construction wood, and debris located beneath the overpass.

Los Angeles officials warned drivers to prepare for prolonged traffic congestion in the area near the Port of Los Angeles.

No injuries have been reported so far. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
