A high-speed pursuit exceeding 130 mph on US 64 ended with a crash into a tree and 28–30 kg of cocaine thrown out of a car window. Two men were arrested, according to the Nash County Sheriff’s Office.
On the morning of February 23, police attempted to stop a silver Infiniti near NC 231. The driver, 47-year-old Deshunto Alston Sr. of Rocky Mount, sped away. During the chase, Alston allegedly threw multiple “bricks” of cocaine onto the highway, totaling approximately 28 kg.
Law enforcement attempted a PIT maneuver at a low speed but was unsuccessful. On the second attempt, the vehicle lost control, crashed into a tree near North Old Franklin Road, and came to a stop. Alston suffered serious injuries and was transported to WakeMed Hospital, where he is in stable condition.
Another vehicle following the pursuit stopped along the route, allegedly attempting to pick up the dropped drugs. The driver, 46-year-old Maurice Randall of Rocky Mount, was arrested at the scene. Police stated Randall was carrying 1 kg of cocaine, one firearm in his waistband, and another in the glove compartment.
Randall is being held on a $1 million bond and appeared in Nash County District Court on February 24.
Authorities stated the incident is part of a multi-year investigation into an alleged drug trafficking network operated by Alston, which distributed 30–50 kg of cocaine per month in Nash County and surrounding areas. Records show Alston previously served 120 months in federal prison following a 2010 conviction for conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine.
The investigation is ongoing.
