A 19-year-old man faces multiple serious charges after police said a University of Georgia student was sexually assaulted early Saturday morning in Athens.
According to Athens-Clarke County police, the suspect, Tydarius Wingfield, a resident of Athens, approached the victim near the 400 block of North Thomas Street at approximately 1:40 a.m. and offered to accompany her to "walk her home."
The two were not previously acquainted.
Police stated that Wingfield then forced the victim behind a building and committed the sexual assault.
Investigators used the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) camera system to determine the location of the incident and track the suspect's movements. Wingfield was arrested and identified through this technology.
The suspect is being charged with counts including rape, kidnapping, aggravated sexual battery, and battery.
Unknown Information
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the victim was taken to the hospital following the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
