Three University of Iowa students were injured in a shooting near campus stemming from a large brawl early Sunday morning.
Iowa City police received reports of a large fight at the Pedestrian Mall around 1:45 a.m. As authorities approached the scene, multiple shots rang out.
Videos circulating on social media show dozens of people gathered, with several groups fighting in the middle of the street. Other clips captured the crowd fleeing in panic when the gunfire erupted.
Police confirmed multiple people were injured and transported to local hospitals for treatment. University of Iowa President Barb Wilson stated that the three injured individuals are all students at the university.
“I write this with a heavy heart. A shooting in downtown Iowa City has left three of our students injured,” she said, confirming that the university is working closely with law enforcement.
The severity of the victims' injuries has not been released.
The incident occurred on a street lined with bars catering to students, just about one block from campus.
The university issued a campus-wide “Hawk Alert” around 1:50 a.m., instructing people to avoid the intersection of E College Street and Clinton Street, confirming there were victims and that emergency responders were on site.
As of Sunday morning, no suspects have been arrested.
Police are urging witnesses to provide information and security camera footage. Iowa City Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect.
