U.S. Border Patrol San Diego Sector announced that it has seized 44 pounds of fentanyl during a highway enforcement operation in San Clemente, California.

According to information from U.S. Border Patrol – San Diego Sector, agents on duty on the highway discovered a duffel bag containing 19 bundles of fentanyl hidden in the trunk of a BMW.

The driver, a U.S. citizen, was arrested at the scene and is facing drug charges under state law, similar to a case where an individual was accused of trafficking 37 pounds of fentanyl in a previous crackdown.

Authorities stated that fentanyl is an extremely dangerous substance, linked to a high number of overdose deaths across the United States, contributing to the drug crisis threatening many regions. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
