Sources in Washington state that the $6 billion Iranian fund currently held by Qatar has become one of the final obstacles in the effort to reach a peace agreement between the US and Iran.
According to the New York Post, the Trump administration and Iranian negotiators are currently discussing the final details of a memorandum aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz for international shipping and extending the timeframe for the next round of negotiations concerning Iran's approximately 1,000 pounds of highly enriched uranium.
This $6 billion fund was previously unfrozen under the Biden administration as part of the 2023 prisoner exchange deal between the US and Iran. However, the money was not transferred directly to Tehran but was only to be used for purchasing food and medical supplies sent to Iran.
According to sources, the disbursement will occur in phases and is tied to Iran meeting conditions such as:
• Reopening the Strait of Hormuz
• Removing sea mines in the region
• Adhering to maritime security commitments
The negotiations are currently described as the “closest to being finalized” since tensions erupted.
This development follows an approximately two-hour meeting in the Situation Room between President Trump and his national security team, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump stated that he is making the “final decision” on the agreement and emphasized that dealing with Iran's enriched uranium remains a “red line.”
The article also states that Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei remains in hiding due to concerns about the risk of assassination by the US or Israel, which has slowed and complicated communication between the two sides.
According to US officials, China has agreed in principle to assist in excavating the uranium buried deep underground after previous airstrikes. However, President Trump has publicly opposed the option of transferring the uranium to Russia or China.
Some other options being considered include:
• Transferring the uranium to Pakistan or Turkey
• Or diluting this material and keeping it inside Iran
