Actor James Handy — who appeared in films like Top Gun: Maverick, Jumanji, and Taps — was killed by his girlfriend's son, according to police.
Authorities received a 911 call on Wednesday morning from the 19200 block of Erwin Street in Tarzana, California, after a caller stated, “I am the son of a human, I just killed the sinner.”
Upon arrival, police found 81-year-old James Handy unconscious in the front yard of the home with multiple stab wounds on his body. According to police, he was stabbed multiple times in the chest and was transported to a local hospital but did not survive.
Shortly thereafter, the suspect, 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, reportedly flagged down officers and identified himself as the person they were looking for.
Police stated that Gledhill is Handy's girlfriend's son and was living with his mother at the time of the incident.
Gledhill was arrested on murder charges. Bail has been set at $2 million.
James Handy's acting career began in the 1970s. His most recent role was as a bartender named Jimmy in Top Gun: Maverick.
He also appeared in the classic film Jumanji alongside Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst, and Jonathan Hyde, playing an exterminator.
According to IMDb, James Handy had nearly 150 film and television roles, including popular series such as The West Wing, NCIS: Los Angeles, CSI: NY, Criminal Minds, and The X-Files.
The motive for the attack has not yet been released.
