Busfield Files Not Guilty Plea, Trial Scheduled for March
NEW MEXICO — Actor and director Timothy Busfield, 68, has officially pleaded not guilty to multiple child abuse charges in New Mexico.
According to New Mexico court records accessed by Fox News Digital, Busfield filed a not guilty plea on February 11, 2026, waiving his right to an arraignment and several other pre-trial proceedings.
The next hearing, a scheduling conference, is set for March 10, 2026.
Three Serious Charges Involving Two 11-Year-Old Twins
Busfield surrendered to local authorities on January 13, 2026, and was held without bond on charges of:
- Two counts of "criminal sexual contact of a minor."
- One count of "child abuse."
According to the arrest warrant released by Fox News Digital, the two 11-year-old twins accused the director — who was reportedly asked to be called "Uncle Tim" on the set of "The Cleaning Lady" series — of inappropriate touching.
The investigation began on November 1, 2024, after a doctor at the University of New Mexico Hospital reported suspected child abuse.
Released on Bond with Strict Conditions
Following his initial detention, on January 20, 2026, Judge Murphy allowed Busfield to be released on personal recognizance, subject to mandatory conditions:
- He must appear at all court proceedings.
- He must not discuss the case with any witnesses.
- He must not have contact with anyone under the age of 18.
Defense Attorney Claims Case "Cannot Be Proven in Court"
Defense attorney Larry Stein asserted that the case "cannot be proven in court" and that the indictment "was anticipated." Stein argued that the prosecution is pursuing a case "lacking legal basis and evidence."
Faces Up to 15 Years in Prison
Under New Mexico state law, the charges Busfield faces carry severe penalties:
- Each count of "criminal sexual contact of a minor" carries a maximum sentence of 6 years in prison.
- The "child abuse" charge carries a maximum penalty of 3 years in prison.
Timothy Busfield is known for his role in the television series "Thirtysomething" and has had a directing career spanning decades in Hollywood. The case continues to be monitored as it proceeds to trial.
