According to initial reports, the accident occurred around 7:30 AM on McCarter Highway. Mr. Coutinho survived the collision between two vehicles, but subsequently suffered a heart attack and passed away at the scene.
Authorities stated that the incident is still under investigation.
Mr. Coutinho served for more than five years in the New Jersey General Assembly as a member of the Democratic Party. In 2013, he withdrew from his re-election campaign after it was discovered he had misappropriated approximately $32,500 from a family charitable foundation. He later entered a plea deal, received three years of probation, and was barred from holding public office.
Earlier in 2026, he was granted a pardon by Governor Phil Murphy.
Beyond his political career, Coutinho was an influential figure in the Portuguese community in Newark, having been involved in organizing the Portugal Day festival for many years. He also co-founded the Ironbound Soccer Club and was inducted into the New Jersey Youth Soccer Hall of Fame in 2021.
Many former colleagues described Coutinho as a person dedicated to his community, always supporting the vulnerable and actively promoting local sports activities.
His passing marks the end of a journey filled with highs and lows, from the political arena and financial scandal to his return to community service.
