Anti-ICE protests outside the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, New Jersey, escalated into chaos on the evening of May 30 as demonstrators clashed with law enforcement, forcing police to use tear gas and set up barriers to control the area.

According to reports, tensions rose following a standoff around the security perimeter between protestors and police. Numerous police vehicles along with riot police carrying plastic shields were deployed to push the crowd away from the Delaney Hall area.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka subsequently imposed a curfew around the Doremus Avenue area near the detention center, effective from midnight Sunday and applying nightly from 9 PM to 6 AM until further notice.

“Due to the escalating situation at Delaney Hall and the increasing need for police intervention, immediate action was necessary.
