LONOKE COUNTY, Arkansas — Aaron Spencer, a father facing second-degree murder charges for allegedly shooting and killing a man suspected of abusing his minor daughter, has won the Republican primary for the position of Lonoke County Sheriff. According to unofficial results from the Arkansas Secretary of State's Office, Spencer secured over 53% of the vote, defeating incumbent Sheriff John Staley in Tuesday's primary election. The incident occurred in October 2024. According to court records, Spencer stated he woke up to find his daughter missing from home. He located her in the truck of 67-year-old Michael Fosler. He is then alleged to have forced Fosler's vehicle off the highway, leading to a confrontation and shootout that resulted in Fosler's death. Following the incident, Spencer called 911. Prior to his death, Fosler was facing multiple sexual assault charges involving Spencer's daughter and was out on bail. Cases involving child abuse always spark public outrage, similar to the instance where a son spoke out against his father regarding legal loopholes in allegations of minor abuse. Spencer, a military veteran and farmer, is currently out on bail awaiting trial. He has pleaded not guilty. The trial was originally scheduled for January, and it remains one of the shooting trials drawing significant local public interest. Although his own force had arrested Spencer in 2024, Sheriff John Staley posted a message respecting the election results after the vote count was finalized. In the November general election, Spencer will face Democratic candidate Brian Mitchell Sr. According to regulations, if convicted, Spencer would be ineligible to serve as sheriff. In a campaign video, Spencer stated that his personal experience made him realize the "shortcomings" in the local law enforcement and court systems. His forceful reaction to protect his daughter is reminiscent of the case where a North Carolina father lunged at the suspect accused of murdering his son right in the courtroom. He maintains that his campaign aims to restore community trust in law enforcement and ensure the safety of families.
