CALIFORNIA — 5/3/2026

The California Democratic Party is organizing a large-scale fundraising event at a high-end resort, with attendance packages priced up to $100,000, sparking debate even among lobbyists.

The event, titled “Pro Tem Cup 2026,” is scheduled to take place from March 20 to 22, 2026, at the Omni La Costa Spa and Resort in Carlsbad, a luxury resort located about 30 miles from San Diego.

High-Priced Attendance Packages

According to the released invitation, the two-day event includes activities such as:
  • golfing
  • spa services
  • dinner parties
  • meetings with politicians

Attendance packages include:
  • $40,000: Individual package, including a two-night resort stay, golf, and spa access.
  • $70,000: Package for two people.
  • $100,000: “Platinum” package for a group of four.

The event is organized by the California Democratic Party along with State Senator Monique Limón, the Senate Majority Leader, to raise funds for upcoming political campaigns, similar to how Assemblymember Isaac Bryan spent heavily on social media promotion from campaign funds.

Skepticism Among Lobbyists

Some in the political lobbying community believe the attendance cost is too high compared to the political access gained. This is not the first time California Democratic Party activities have sparked controversy regarding their organization and messaging.

According to a Sacramento lobbyist, spending such a large sum to attend a crowded event may not necessarily yield a proportionate return.

Debate Amid High Cost of Living

The event is drawing attention as studies show California's cost of living is about 11% higher than the national average. To alleviate this burden, the state once launched a down payment assistance program for first-time homebuyers, yet economic challenges for residents remain unresolved.

Some observers suggest that hosting a fundraiser at a luxury resort may create an image that contrasts with the message of supporting residents facing rising living costs.

Event Venue

Omni La Costa Spa and Resort is a roughly 400-acre resort famous for:
  • two championship golf courses
  • a large spa
  • multiple swimming pools
  • high-end restaurants

The resort is frequently used for corporate conferences and high-profile events.

California Democratic leaders and Senator Monique Limón's office have not issued official responses regarding the comments about the event. Meanwhile, in San Francisco, a moderate Democratic group also spent $10 million to campaign for local political races, highlighting the massive financial scale of partisan activities in the state.
