The California Republican Party has not officially endorsed any candidate in the gubernatorial race, despite President Donald Trump previously publicizing his support for Steve Hilton.
Internal voting results showed Chad Bianco receiving 49% support, while Mr. Hilton reached 44%. No candidate crossed the 60% threshold required to receive an official party endorsement.
This development highlights a rift within the party in the most populous state in the U.S., as many delegates did not follow the choice of President Donald Trump.
Mr. Bianco evaluated the close results as reflecting realistic competition while expressing confidence in his ability to win in the future. Meanwhile, Mr. Hilton emphasized the advantage of President Trump's support and his leading position in the polls.
Recent surveys show Mr. Hilton fluctuating between 16–22% support, while Mr. Bianco sits at 10–14%.
These internal voting results increase the likelihood of a scenario where two Republican candidates lead in the primary round, which could allow them to dominate as they enter the general election.
The two candidates have also continuously criticized each other during the campaign, indicating that internal competition remains tense.
