California is moving quickly to remove the "heroic" image of César Chávez from schools after allegations of child abuse were uncovered.

Teachers across the state have received instructions to edit or remove teaching content related to Chávez—a figure who was honored Cesar Chavez amidst shocking allegations that recently surfaced.

The California Department of Education is updating its history-social science framework, which spans over 800 pages, to reduce or eliminate sections related to Chávez. This follows allegations that he abused two girls starting when they were only 12 years old, and allegedly assaulted long-time ally Dolores Huerta, according to CalMatters.

For many years, California students were taught that Chávez was an "American hero" who fought for social justice and labor rights. Children's books such as Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez were even included in curricula as early as kindergarten.

Official lessons also required students to explain why Chávez was a "hero" and describe his "worldview."

Now, the entire education system is undergoing a review.

The Los Angeles Unified School District confirmed it is reviewing all relevant teaching materials. Acting Chief of School Operations Andrés Chait acknowledged the shocking nature of the allegations, forcing California school systems to re-evaluate the impact on their curricula.

Meanwhile, the state government has begun taking swift action. Several politicians have proposed renaming Farmworkers' Day on March 31 and called for the removal of Chávez's name from schools, parks, and public facilities.

There are currently several dozen schools in California named after Chávez.

The California Department of Education affirmed its stance of standing with victims of violence and abuse, stating that teaching content will be adjusted to reflect a more complete historical context, no longer glorifying the individual as before.

The incident has left the education system in a defensive position, as an image built over decades is being dismantled in a very short amount of time.
