Florida police confirmed there were no gunshots during a panic that sent hundreds of people fleeing at Daytona Beach during spring break, despite many believing a shooting had occurred.
The actual cause: the sound of a water bottle being crushed in the crowd.
Scenes of chaos spread rapidly online
Videos circulating online show hundreds of people panicking and running, with many screaming and trying to leave the beach area.
However, police stated:
“There were no shots fired on the beach.”
According to Mike Chitwood, the sound that frightened the crowd came from people crushing water bottles, creating small popping noises that were mistaken for gunfire.
