The DeKalb County Board of Education is considering a large-scale restructuring proposal that could close 27 schools, expand capacity at 11, and convert 8 others.
On Monday evening, district leaders held a meeting to hear parents' opinions on the plan. Many parents stated they need more information before forming a view.
Concerns Over School Closures
Frank Chao, a parent with a child at Ashford Park Elementary School, said he loves his child's school.
"Ashford Park is beautiful. It's the diamond of our community," Chao shared.
Ashford Park is on the list of potential school closures. Chao stated he is willing to listen but currently only knows that the school might close, and he wants what's best for his child.
Reasons for Restructuring
District leaders cited declining student enrollment as the primary reason.
Tracy Richter, vice president of the firm overseeing the reorganization process, stated that the district has seen a reduction of approximately 12,000 students and currently has nearly 20,000 empty seats.
She acknowledged that reducing the number of school facilities would be impactful and "very painful" for the affected communities, but affirmed that leaders would listen to constructive feedback from parents.
Concerns About Class Sizes
Some parents are concerned that school closures could lead to larger class sizes.
Iris Cole, a parent with children at Stephenson Middle School and Stephenson High School, said she wants full information before making an assessment.
Johnny Roberts, a parent with a child at Druid Hills High School, warned that consolidating too many students into one facility could lead to numerous problems for the district.
Next Steps
The district stated that the proposals are currently in their early stages and subject to change. A final decision could be made by the end of the calendar year.
