A knife-wielding man stabbed three people, killing a 39-year-old woman and a dog on the Capital Beltway (I-495) near Annandale, Virginia, before being shot and killed by a state trooper.
The incident occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. Sunday following a property-damage collision between vehicles. According to authorities, the suspect suddenly attacked the occupants of the other vehicle with a knife.
Virginia State Police (VSP) stated that a trooper on the scene opened fire in “self-defense,” shooting the suspect twice in the chest. The individual later died at the hospital.
A total of four people were involved in the incident, including the suspect. The two surviving victims reportedly suffered serious injuries and were transported to Inova Fairfax Medical Center. One of the victims required CPR at the scene. No law enforcement officers were injured.
By late afternoon, more than a dozen police vehicles remained in the area. Southbound traffic on I-495 was severely delayed, and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) advised motorists to seek alternative routes.
Officials are continuing to investigate the motive behind the attack.
