Authorities have launched a widespread manhunt after a Christian County deputy was fatally shot Monday afternoon near Highlandville, Missouri.
Blue Alert Issued
The Missouri State Highway Patrol issued a Blue Alert just before 4 p.m. This system is similar to an Amber Alert but is used when a suspect is believed to have seriously injured or killed a law enforcement officer and remains a danger to the community.
Suspect Vehicle Information
Authorities identified the vehicle involved as a white 2001 Chevrolet Silverado extended cab pickup truck, Missouri license plate 9MGX36.
Identifying features include:
- Silver metallic front bumper
- Rusty roof
- Black body trim
- Tinted rear windows
- Three-ball hitch on the rear
The vehicle was seen leaving the shooting scene, heading south on Highway 160 from Route HH (Christian County). Highway 160 leads into southern Missouri and into north-central Arkansas, east of Harrison.
Authorities are asking the public not to approach the vehicle and to call 911 immediately if spotted.
Suspect
The Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the suspect as Richard Dean Bird. Detailed descriptions have not yet been released.
Official Reactions
Missouri Senator Josh Hawley stated he is praying for the victim's family and hopes justice will be swiftly served. Senator Eric Schmitt called this a "devastating loss" for Christian County. State Representative Jamie Ray Gragg urged the community to support the victim's family and the officers on duty.
Authorities continue to investigate and coordinate the search for the suspect as the situation remains potentially dangerous.
