ATLANTA — An Atlanta family is calling for justice after a shooting Tuesday night on Tiger Flowers Drive killed 7-year-old Zoey Price and injured her mother. According to police, the incident occurred around 9:49 p.m. Cassandra Ervin, 44, has been discharged from the hospital but is still recovering with a bullet lodged in her ribs. Zoey, a first-grader who loved dancing and cheerleading, was shot in the chest and did not survive. Her older sister, Tanitya Ervin, said she held her as Zoey took her final breath. Tanitya recalled that before losing consciousness, Zoey said, "I love you, sister." The family was inside the house when they heard gunfire. "Usually when we hear shots, we drop down out of habit. But the first person I heard was my mom," Tanitya said through tears. She called 911 and held her sister waiting for authorities to arrive after this heart-wrenching shooting at an Atlanta home. Zoey and her mother were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where doctors confirmed the young girl had died. Atlanta police said an argument between two men about 30 minutes earlier might be related to the shooting. Police Chief Darren Schierbaum said the individuals involved likely knew each other, although the incident is not considered domestic violence. Currently, authorities are working hard to arrest suspects in the fatal shooting to bring them to justice. Cassandra Ervin is a single mother of five children. The grieving mother after this immense loss is now facing financial pressure from living expenses and Zoey's funeral costs. Willie Watkins Funeral Home has assisted with organizing the funeral. Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers or the Atlanta Police Department. The family wants the perpetrator to face life imprisonment or the maximum penalty under the law. The family has also set up a GoFundMe page to support funeral and living expenses. The family plans to hold a memorial balloon release for Zoey next Monday.
