A famous bar in Albany, the capital of New York, which frequently hosted lawmakers, lobbyists, and business leaders, has officially closed after years of operation.

The War Room Tavern, along with its accompanying cigar lounge, ceased operations as owner Todd Shapiro, a public relations expert, decided to pivot toward a new business venture.

A Familiar Meeting Point for Politicians

The War Room Tavern has long been considered an informal meeting place for Albany's political circles. According to Shapiro, the establishment has hosted four New York governors, numerous state and federal officials, and figures from both political parties.

He noted that many significant meetings and exchanges between political leaders and business executives took place there.

Owner Shifts to Private Club Model

After closing The War Room Tavern, Shapiro plans to focus on developing a new project called Greenhouse Social Club at La Serre, a private members-only club in downtown Albany.

According to him, the new project will feature multiple lounges, dining areas, and a rooftop space—a rarity in the downtown area.

He stated that he has invested over $1 million into the new location.

Not Due to Financial Issues

The owner stated that the decision to close The War Room Tavern was not related to financial difficulties. The main reason is that he does not want to manage multiple business locations simultaneously while developing the new project.

He also mentioned receiving several offers to buy the bar and is open to letting others continue the operation if they wish to maintain the name and original concept of The War Room, where New Yorkers flocked to seek community and political connection.
