FBI agents searched the home of Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, who targeted a Michigan synagogue and daycare with explosives. All children and staff are safe; the suspect is deceased.
FBI agents conducted a search of the home of Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, the suspect in the attack on Temple Israel synagogue and daycare in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan.
The search took place on the night of March 12 in Dearborn Heights, similar to previous
searches of the homes of two suspects who threw explosive devices, hours after the 41-year-old man drove a vehicle containing explosives onto the synagogue campus before opening fire.
According to officials, the suspect was killed after security forces at the synagogue opened fire to stop the attack.
Vehicle Containing Explosives Crashes Into Synagogue
Police stated that the incident occurred around 12:20 PM on March 12.
According to the initial investigation:
- The suspect drove the vehicle directly into the Temple Israel building
- He then used a rifle to fire at security forces
- The vehicle contained explosive materials, including mortar rounds
The vehicle burst into flames during the chaos, and the suspect's body was found inside. The incident reminded the public of security concerns raised after police
seized a weapons cache from a shooting suspect in Rhode Island.
140 Children in Daycare Safely Protected
At the time of the attack, approximately 140 children under the age of 6 were attending the synagogue's daycare.
Thanks to the quick response of teachers and security forces:
- All children and staff were safely evacuated
- No children were injured
One security guard was struck by the vehicle and knocked unconscious but is expected to recover. Gun violence remains a pressing issue in many areas, as
three people were recently arrested following a shooting and brawl in Toccoa after a search.
About 30 police officers and emergency responders were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation while entering the building to search for victims.
FBI Investigates Motive for the Attack
Investigators stated the incident is being viewed as an act of targeted violence against the Jewish community.
According to records:
- Ghazali was born in Lebanon in 1985
- He entered the U.S. in 2011 through marriage to a U.S. citizen
- He became a U.S. citizen in 2016
Some sources indicated the suspect may have been psychologically impacted after several family members were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon about 10 days before the incident.
Michigan Governor: Tragedy Could Have Been Severe
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer stated that if first responders had not acted promptly, the incident could have led to very serious consequences.
She said:
"If it weren't for the quick response of teachers and security personnel, the consequences could have been catastrophic."
