Florida: 79-year-old woman arrested after 1-year-old allegedly drinks meth

A 79-year-old woman in Florida has been arrested on charges of child neglect and causing great bodily harm. The incident occurred in Callahan, Nassau County, after a 1-year-old baby accidentally drank methamphetamine (meth) hidden in a personal water bottle.

Suspect Judith Addison was charged alongside three others living in the same home: Hayden Simmons (21), Damien Windham (21), and Erica Foley (45). In addition to child neglect charges similar to the case of the Florida mother arrested after leaving two small children with an Uber driver, Foley also faces charges of possession of illegal drug paraphernalia.

Incident details and the adults' delayed response

According to a report from the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, on February 24, the child drank water from a "sippy cup" at home. Shortly after, the parents discovered a small bag containing a substance suspected to be meth inside the cup.

Notably, despite being aware of the danger of a child being exposed to toxic substances, the adults in the house did not call 911 immediately. These illegal substances often originate from illicit meth labs, causing serious consequences for the community and children. Only when the child began showing signs of vomiting did the mother take the baby to a local fire station for paramedics to transport them to a hospital for treatment.

During a search of the home, police seized several glass pipes with meth residue and other related items. All four residents were arrested and face charges related to causing serious injury to a minor.

Sheriff Bill Leeper expressed outrage at the nature of this case in an official statement. He emphasized the importance of protecting children from toxic and dangerous environments. These negligent acts are reminiscent of the case where a mother was arrested after forcing her young daughter to walk a long distance due to adult selfishness.

"This is a heartbreaking and completely preventable situation. There is no excuse for drugs to be within reach of a small child," Sheriff Leeper stated.

Currently, authorities have not provided an update on the 1-year-old's condition. Previously, another tragic incident involving a small child occurred in the state when a 1-year-old boy was attacked by a family bulldog. Authorities are continuing to investigate to clarify the responsibility of each individual involved in this case.
