California Governor Gavin Newsom's office is facing controversy after his communications director responded inappropriately via email. The incident involved a reporter who had inquired about the Governor's dyslexia diagnosis.
According to screenshots circulating on social media, Izzy Gardon, Newsom's communications chief, sent an email to Real Clear Politics reporter Susan Crabtree with the vulgar phrase: “Respectfully, f–k off.”
Background on the Dyslexia Inquiry
Earlier, reporter Crabtree had sent an email requesting proof that Governor Newsom was diagnosed with dyslexia as a child. Newsom has previously publicly shared that he was diagnosed with a reading disorder in 1972 when he was about five years old.
The topic of Newsom's dyslexia returned to the spotlight after an event in Atlanta last weekend, where he promoted his new memoir.
Controversy Over SAT Score Remark
Also in Atlanta, Governor Newsom mentioned his SAT score of 960 during a conversation with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, stating: “I'm a 960 SAT guy. I'm no better than anyone.” This remark drew criticism from some quarters, who felt his phrasing lacked subtlety and could be misunderstood.
Following the backlash, Newsom responded strongly on social media, explaining that he intended to speak about his personal struggle with dyslexia and not to discriminate against or devalue anyone.
As of now, Governor Newsom's office has not provided any official explanation regarding the communications director's email. This incident continues to fuel debate as Newsom is considered a potential Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential election.
