NEW HAMPSHIRE — 3/5/2026
California Governor Gavin Newsom publicly criticized Kristi Noem after President Trump announced she would be leaving her position as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) by the end of the month.
On social media platform X, Newsom wrote that Noem would be remembered as the most controversial secretary in the agency’s history.
Remarks During New Hampshire Campaign Stop
During a book promotion event in New Hampshire, Newsom continued commenting on the cabinet shakeup, despite having previously struggled to fill auditoriums at some other stops during his tour.
He suggested that the leadership change at the top reflected difficulties within the federal administration.
Newsom’s communications team also shared a meme related to Noem’s departure, accompanied by the short message “BYE GIRL.”
Changes at the Department of Homeland Security
President Trump announced his choice of Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin as the successor to lead DHS.
According to the announcement, Noem will continue serving as secretary until 3/31/2026. After that date, Mullin is expected to take over pending Senate confirmation.
Noem was subsequently assigned a new role in a security initiative called “Shield of the Americas,” set to be announced in Doral, Florida.
Recent Controversies
In recent weeks, Noem faced numerous questions from lawmakers regarding:
FEMA budget management
Aircraft usage costs
Certain agency communications campaigns
There were also political debates surrounding her statements during congressional hearings.
A Contentious Political Relationship
Newsom and Noem have publicly clashed multiple times over federal and state policy issues, particularly regarding topics related to border management and federal authority over states.
Newsom’s appearance in New Hampshire comes as he continues making events across the country, fueling speculation about his future political role.
