Atlanta firefighters were forced to retreat when a man opened fire on them while they were responding to a 911 call regarding a domestic dispute.
According to police, the incident occurred in the 600 block of University Avenue. A woman called 911 reporting her husband was threatening her with a gun and assaulting her, a dangerous situation similar to the recent case of a woman shot in the neck at her home.
Upon arrival, firefighters identified the suspect as Anthony Bell, who appeared intoxicated. He drew a gun and fired two shots toward the first responders. This incident recalls the case of a man arrested for threatening to open fire outside an Atlanta nightclub not long ago.
No one was hit. Firefighters quickly moved to a safe position and requested backup.
The Atlanta Police Department and Atlanta Fire Rescue SWAT medics were deployed to the scene to handle notable security developments in the area.
After a brief standoff, the suspect exited the house and surrendered.
During an on-site search, authorities seized a revolver.
Anthony Bell faces four counts of aggravated assault, with additional charges being considered. As of the morning of April 17, the suspect had not yet been booked into jail, according to records.
A spokesperson for the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department stated that the situation highlights the level of risk responders face, even when following safety protocols.
