A Robinson R66 helicopter carrying three people crashed in a wooded area near Dawsonville, Georgia, on the evening of May 30, prompting federal officials to launch an investigation into the cause of the accident.
According to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the helicopter crash occurred around 10:35 PM in an area outside the Atlanta metropolitan region.
The Dawson County Sheriff's Office, along with local fire and EMS personnel, quickly secured the scene after receiving reports of a possible aircraft crash. Images from the scene showed the area cordoned off with caution tape and numerous police vehicles.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently leading the investigation. A federal investigator was dispatched to the scene to examine the wreckage, collect evidence, and then move the helicopter to a secure facility for further inspection.
Officials stated that investigators will review air traffic control data, radar tracks, weather conditions, aircraft maintenance records, and the pilot's background.
The NTSB also appealed to witnesses or anyone with camera footage of the incident to provide information to assist the investigation.
Authorities have not yet released the condition of the three individuals on board the helicopter or their identities. The cause of the accident remains undetermined.
