Hunter College Professor Suspended After Outrageous Remarks
Hunter College has suspended biology professor Allyson Friedman while conducting an internal investigation. This decision followed the recording and wide circulation of her comments during an online meeting, which sparked widespread public outrage.
The incident occurred on February 10 during a meeting of Community Education Council 3 in New York City. In the recording, while Professor Friedman's microphone was still on, she made several highly controversial statements.
“They’re too dumb to know they’re in a bad school.”
“If you train a Black person well enough, they’ll know to use the back. You don’t have to tell them anymore.”
These statements immediately drew strong reactions during the meeting and across social media platforms. Many local officials have condemned the remarks as offensive and explicitly racist.
Reactions and Investigation
Hunter College President Nancy Cantor issued a statement saying the school is conducting an investigation in accordance with conduct and anti-discrimination policies. Pending a formal conclusion, Professor Friedman has been placed on leave to facilitate the investigation process.
Professor Friedman later explained to the New York Times that she was explaining an example of “racial bias” to her child within the context of the discussion. She claimed the statement was misunderstood because her full explanation was not heard.
Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal called the remarks “unacceptable.” Meanwhile, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. expressed concern about Professor Friedman continuing to teach before the official investigation concludes.
Hunter College also stated that counseling and support services have been provided to students and staff following this unfortunate incident. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be announced once results are available.
