New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani publicly criticized the Democratic Party for lacking vision, while describing his relationship with President Trump as “frank, direct, and effective.”
In an interview on the program “Meet the Press,” Mamdani said the party needs to reflect the country’s urgency and provide clear direction instead of just focusing on the age of the leadership generation.
“We know what we are against. But what are we for?” he questioned, emphasizing that this is the core question for the party.
Mamdani argued that the Democratic Party had a clear vision 100 years ago, but currently, many voters have to look back at history to see it. He asserted that he presented a clear action plan when running for mayor.
When asked about a generational shift in leadership, Mamdani said the issue is not age but vision and direction.
He avoided answering whether Vice President Kamala Harris should run in 2028, stating he is focusing on his first term and the 2026 midterm elections.
He also did not offer an opinion on whether Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer should step down, though he confirmed having worked with him on several issues such as support for delivery workers.
Mamdani expressed excitement about the future of Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Notably, despite significant political differences, Mamdani said his relationship with President Trump is “constructive.”
“That relationship is frank, direct, and effective,” he said.
The biggest common ground between the two, according to Mamdani, is their love for New York City and a desire to deliver results for the city.
He believes he has an advantage in working with President Trump because Trump is a New Yorker who understands how the city’s systems and life operate.
However, Mamdani also emphasized that he has expressed disagreement with President Trump on many issues, including ICE enforcement sweeps.
