Law enforcement in Virginia is conducting a large-scale manhunt for a suspect deemed “armed and extremely dangerous” following an ambush that left one deputy dead and another injured during a welfare check on the evening of May 30.
According to the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Logan Utt, 31, died after being shot by suspect Michael Puckett. The other deputy survived thanks to a ballistic vest and is now in stable condition.
The incident occurred around 9:30 PM local time when two deputies were dispatched to a home after a request for a welfare check from family members. Upon approaching the suspect, Puckett allegedly opened fire without warning.
The two deputies returned fire, but the suspect fled the scene.
