US Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed the notion that Iran emerged stronger after the war with the US, stating instead that Tehran is now in a state of severe military and economic weakness.
Speaking before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on June 3, Rubio described Iran as facing “large-scale devastation” after recent US military operations.
He stated that Iran currently:
Has almost no significant naval capacity remaining.
Its air defense systems are heavily damaged.
Its air force is severely degraded.
Many missile launchers and drones have been destroyed.
Rubio also mentioned that Iran's defense industry suffered significant losses after US attacks.
Beyond the military sector, the US Secretary of State believes that Iran's economy is in crisis with hyperinflation, currency devaluation, and difficulties in paying employee salaries.
He said:
“They no longer have a navy, no longer an air force, no longer an air defense system. The leadership is divided, the economy is in hyperinflation, the currency is almost worthless.”
Rubio then sarcastically added:
“Other than that, they're doing just fine.”
The remarks came as the Trump administration continues to pursue negotiations with Iran to extend the ceasefire agreement and seek a solution for Tehran's nuclear program.
Meanwhile, Iran has yet to officially respond to the US Secretary of State's new statements.
