Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently issued a stern warning regarding Iran's missile program, calling it an “unsustainable threat.” He emphasized that this development poses a major risk to regional and international security.
According to Mr. Rubio, Iran is pursuing a path that could one day allow them to develop weapons with a range capable of reaching the U.S. mainland. Currently, Tehran already possesses various weapons capable of reaching much of Europe, causing deep concern.
“For a country under sanctions, with a crippled economy and people facing many hardships, they still find the resources to invest in missile systems that become more capable every year. This is a threat that cannot be sustained long-term.”
This statement comes amid ongoing nuclear program negotiations between the U.S. and Iran in Geneva. The deadline set by President Trump for these talks is also approaching, adding further pressure to the situation.
U.S. officials believe that Iran's ballistic missile capabilities need to be included in a broader negotiating framework, rather than being limited to the nuclear program. They argue that ignoring this issue would be a significant oversight in ensuring regional stability.
As of now, the Iranian side has not issued any official response to Secretary Rubio's latest remarks. This makes the future developments of tensions between the two sides even more unpredictable.
