WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Michigan — A serious security incident occurred at Temple Israel on Walnut Lake Road near Drake Road when a vehicle reportedly drove straight into the synagogue building, followed by gunfire at the scene.

According to law enforcement and police sources who spoke to WDIV Local 4 / ClickOnDetroit, the vehicle caught fire after crashing into the building, producing heavy smoke in the area, similar to recent vehicle-ramming incidents at power stations under investigation.

Temple Israel is a major synagogue in the area that also houses a daycare and community facilities. The incident raised concerns about security at religious institutions, similar to proposals to allow churches to use armed volunteers to protect congregants.

Security measures

Police deployed multiple emergency measures to control the situation, reminiscent of the scene at the car-ramming into a crowd and subsequent gunfire in Redlands: • A shelter-in-place order was issued within approximately a 1-mile radius of the area. • Nearby schools were evacuated or placed on temporary lockdown. • Security was heightened at Jewish facilities in the region.

Initially, authorities said the suspect had not been apprehended and may have barricaded inside the area after the incident.
