Mountain Lion Discovered Instead of Coyote
FALLBROOK, California — A family in Fallbrook, San Diego County, experienced a terrifying discovery when they found a mountain lion trapped in a homemade snare in their backyard, after several of their chickens and cats mysteriously disappeared.
The Hernandez family reported that numerous chickens from their coop and four cats had gone missing in recent days. A large hole was found on the chicken coop roof, with chicken feathers scattered everywhere.
Initially, the family suspected a coyote was the culprit. The father-in-law had set up a trap to catch the animal. However, upon checking the trap, they were surprised to find a mountain lion calmly sitting inside.
911 Called Over Child Safety Concerns
Concerned for the safety of their children and pets, the family called 911. County wildlife officials arrived on the scene the next day and released the mountain lion back into its natural habitat.
According to California law, mountain lions caught in traps by individuals must be released in the area where they were captured.
Neighbors Concerned About Animal's Return
Sonia Hernandez stated that the family was not pleased with the animal being released near a residential area, fearing it might return.
A neighbor who owns horses also expressed concern that once the animal has identified a food source, it is entirely possible for it to come back.
Recommendations from Wildlife Experts
The Fallbrook area has many hilly and forested regions where mountain lions naturally reside. Wildlife experts advise residents to reinforce their coops, avoid leaving pet food outdoors, install lights and security cameras, and keep children and pets supervised, especially during the evening.
There have been no reports of injuries to people. However, the family stated they continue to live in a state of anxiety and vigilance, anticipating the animal's potential return.
