Gavin Newsom has spoken out for the first time regarding the allegations against Eric Swalwell, but he did not provide a clear position on whether Swalwell should withdraw from the gubernatorial race or resign.
In a statement sent to the press, Newsom’s office said the allegations from multiple sources are “concerning and need to be taken seriously.” However, questions regarding whether Mr. Swalwell should withdraw from the race or leave Congress received no direct response.
Earlier, four women made allegations related to sexual misconduct, including serious content. Mr. Swalwell has denied all allegations.
The political reaction was swift. Nancy Pelosi stated that she had directly asked Mr. Swalwell to withdraw from the race and called for an investigation.
Several other Democratic candidates in California have also publicly criticized and called for Mr. Swalwell to resign. A number of labor organizations and advocacy groups have withdrawn their support, while some members of Congress who had previously backed the campaign also announced their withdrawal.
This development puts Mr. Swalwell's political position in a difficult situation as proposals to remove him from Congress have emerged.
Amidst the competitive California gubernatorial race, Gavin Newsom maintains his stance of not endorsing any candidate while avoiding deep involvement in internal controversies.
