An officer-involved shooting occurred in Newton County as Georgia State Patrol troopers pursued a man who fled a traffic stop.
According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety, troopers were assisting the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in a traffic stop involving Jamari Thurman, 20, of Covington.
After identifying a traffic violation, a trooper signaled for a stop on GA 162 near Brown Bridge Road. The driver initially slowed down but then sped away and turned onto Old Oak Court.
When the vehicle stopped at a dead end, Thurman exited and fled on foot with a handgun in his hand. One trooper pursued on foot, while the other remained to control the vehicle and passengers.
During the foot chase, the trooper opened fire, striking Thurman. Immediately after, the same trooper provided first aid to the suspect before medical personnel arrived at the scene.
Thurman was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital following the shooting and is currently in stable condition.
A relative of Thurman present at the scene in Newton County stated that the car belonged to her, and she had only asked him to go change the tires before the incident occurred.
The incident is currently under investigation.
