A female employee of PBS Kansas has died after being shot outside her home in Wichita, with the suspect identified as her estranged husband.
The victim was 25-year-old Ivy Unruh, a PBS Kansas engineer and a former U.S. Marine. She was shot in the upper torso outside her apartment at approximately 8:00 AM on April 18.
After being transported to the hospital in critical condition, she succumbed to her injuries on April 21.
The suspect, 29-year-old Joshua Orlando, was the one who called 911 and was arrested at the scene. Police recovered a firearm at the site of the incident.
Initially, Orlando was charged with aggravated battery, but the charge was upgraded to first-degree murder following the victim’s death—a legal process common in criminal cases such as when Lindsay Clancy appeared in court for the first time after a family tragedy.
Authorities confirmed the two were married but living separately. The case is being investigated as domestic violence, reminiscent of the incident where a mother was murdered in Utah just one day after filing for divorce.
PBS Kansas leadership stated that the staff is devastated by the loss of their colleague, similar to the grief felt when a Mableton elementary school secretary passed away suddenly while at work; she was described as a dedicated, reliable, and high-performing professional.
A fundraising campaign has been launched to assist the victim’s family with funeral costs, emphasizing her military service characterized by responsibility and dedication.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to clarify the full sequence of events while advising the public to follow only official announcements to prevent instances like Cobb County police debunking false rumors that cause public alarm.
