ROME/VATICAN – Marco Rubio is preparing for what has been described as a "frank" exchange with Pope Leo XIV during his visit to the Vatican this week, amid emerging disagreements with Donald Trump regarding immigration issues and the Iran conflict.

According to U.S. diplomatic officials, Rubio’s trip will last from Wednesday to Friday, focusing on discussions regarding Middle Eastern and Western Hemisphere issues while seeking to de-escalate tensions between the two sides.

The U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See, Brian Burch, stated that the dialogue aims to promote direct exchange and resolve differences through conversation.

In recent times, Pope Leo XIV—the first American to hold this office—has repeatedly held views that diverge from those of the Trump administration.

President Trump has criticized the Pope’s stance on Iran, arguing that it could pose a risk to security.

Conversely, Pope Leo XIV has affirmed that he is not afraid to speak out against U.S. government policies.

As part of the trip, Rubio is also expected to meet with Giorgia Meloni—a European leader considered to have close ties with President Trump, yet who has still voiced opposition to certain statements directed at the Pope.
