WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling, allowing a New Jersey pregnancy support center to continue its lawsuit to block the state government's demand for its donor list.

The case revolves around First Choice Women’s Resource Centers, an organization that the state of New Jersey has required to provide donor information under a subpoena since 2023. Previously, lower courts had dismissed the organization's lawsuit, citing insufficient legal grounds to block the subpoena.

However, the Supreme Court justices disagreed with that reasoning. Writing for the entire court, Justice Neil Gorsuch stated that requiring the disclosure of donor information could discourage people from participating in or supporting the organization.

He emphasized that making such personal information public could lead individuals and organizations to restrict expressing their own views, particularly on sensitive issues.

New Jersey stated that the subpoena was issued to serve an investigation into allegations that the organization had engaged in misleading behavior toward its supporters.

However, the center argued that being forced to disclose its donor list could create a chilling effect on supporters, directly impacting the organization's operations.

This ruling does not conclude the lawsuit but allows the organization to continue pursuing the case in lower courts.
