In opening remarks at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) offered high praise for border security achievements under the Trump administration. He emphasized that aggressive enforcement measures have brought about clear positive changes compared to the previous period.

Citing data from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Senator Grassley stated that zero illegal immigrants were released into the interior for 10 consecutive months. Additionally, CBP forces achieved significant results by seizing over 617,000 pounds of drugs, helping protect communities from dangerous narcotics.

Differences from the Previous Administration

When comparing the current situation to the previous period, Grassley highlighted the border crisis that once occurred and the dangers faced by law enforcement. He noted that agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have been under immense pressure, with the number of death threats against them increasing by a record 8,000%.

Despite these challenges, ICE has coordinated tens of thousands of arrests of individuals posing a threat to national security. Among them, more than 1,500 individuals were identified or suspected of having links to terrorist organizations, and over 7,000 gang members were apprehended.

Oversight of Department of Homeland Security Operations

The hearing focused on evaluating the effectiveness of DHS operations amid funding disruptions affecting the department. Secretary Kristi Noem attended to testify and answer questions from senators of both the Democratic and Republican parties.

Concluding the opening portion, Chairman Grassley called for all parties to maintain order and a respectful attitude throughout the session. He affirmed that this is a crucial oversight hearing for the agency responsible for the key task of protecting homeland security and maintaining the rule of law in the United States.
