Many people were injured after gunfire erupted at Haywood Mall, the largest shopping center in South Carolina, on Saturday afternoon, prompting a large-scale response from police and fire departments.
The Greenville Police Department stated that the incident occurred around 1 p.m. local time at Haywood Mall in Greenville city, South Carolina.
According to initial reports, at least two people were transported to the hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet released information on the extent of the victims' injuries.
Police confirmed that several individuals connected to the incident have been detained.
A spokesperson for the Greenville Police Department stated:
"The scene is still being processed, but the situation is under control."
Officials also confirmed that there is no longer a threat to the public. However, the process of checking and securing the scene may take several more hours.
The Greenville City Fire Department, along with various other law enforcement agencies, is assisting in evacuating people from the shopping mall.
The Greenlink public transit system dispatched air-conditioned buses to the scene to assist those being evacuated in the hot weather.
Police stated that Haywood Mall would be closed until further notice.
As of Saturday evening, the cause of the shooting has not yet been released. The investigation is ongoing.
