WASHINGTON — May 3, 2026

Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma, nominated by President Trump to serve as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), possesses a rather unique name. According to him, the name is actually a combination of two family members' names.

The Origin of the Name “Markwayne”

In a 2014 interview with Roll Call, Mullin explained that his name was combined from those of two of his uncles.

His father was the youngest of eight siblings, two of whom had no sons. When Mullin was born, the family decided to combine the names of these two uncles—Mark and Wayne—into Markwayne.

Mullin stated that his two uncles always paid special attention to him, often giving him extra birthday gifts to make him feel noticed within the large family.

Background and Career

Mullin was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. He became the second member of the Cherokee Nation to serve in the U.S. Senate, following Robert Latham Owen.

Before entering politics, Mullin:
  • competed in MMA with an undefeated 5-0 record
  • managed his family's plumbing business

He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012, representing Oklahoma's 2nd Congressional District for approximately 10 years before officially becoming a U.S. Senator in 2022.

Nomination to Homeland Security

President Trump announced the selection of Mullin to lead the Department of Homeland Security after Kristi Noem vacated the position.

According to the announcement, Noem will continue to serve in the role until March 31, 2026, after which Mullin is expected to take over if the U.S. Senate confirms the nomination.

Mullin is considered a close political ally of President Trump and has drawn attention for heated exchanges at Senate hearings with political opponents.
