April 1, 2026 (New York time) – Washington DC police have arrested a suspect in a murder described as “especially brutal,” in which the victim was bound, assaulted, and set on fire after death in a Logan Circle apartment.

The victim is 40-year-old Syed Hammad Hussain, a resident of Northwest Washington.

Suspect arrested:

  • Rico Rashaad Barnes, 36, residing in Northwest DC
  • Charged with first-degree murder while armed

A second suspect, Alphonso Walker, is currently in custody on an unrelated matter and is expected to be charged in connection with this case.

Incident Timeline

According to the Metropolitan Police Department:

  • Around 1:30 a.m. on February 11, 2026, the victim returned to the building
  • Two suspects followed immediately behind
  • They then knocked on the door and were let in by the victim

Immediately after entering:

  • The victim was attacked in the lobby and knocked down
  • He was dragged or carried into the apartment
  • The assault continued inside, out of camera range, with a level of violence similar to recent severe victim assaults recorded recently.

When firefighters arrived at 3:30 a.m. due to reports of smoke:

  • They extinguished a small fire
  • Discovered the victim unconscious and not breathing. The incident shocked the public, much like the case where a woman's body was discovered in a forest in Cumming.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Forensic Results

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined:

Cause of death:

  • Blunt force trauma
  • Ligature strangulation
  • Thermal injuries (burns) occurred after death

When found:

  • The victim was lying face down
  • Hands and feet were bound
  • Blood was present on the floor, walls, and furniture

Motive and Stolen Property

Police determined the crime occurred during a robbery:

  • The apartment was ransacked
  • Missing items: Electronics, Jewelry, Cash
Total estimated value is approximately $50,000.

Investigation Traces

Police tracked the suspects through:

  • Building and area surveillance cameras
  • Witness testimony
  • GPS data from monitoring devices

Footage shows:

  • The two suspects leaving the building around 2:30 a.m.
  • Carrying multiple bags
  • Moving through Rhode Island Avenue
  • Boarding a bus and then continuing on foot

The Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Barnes on March 30, 2026. Previously, a suspect arrested after a stabbing in San Francisco also demonstrated the authorities’ determination in tracking criminals.

  • The victim did not previously know the subjects

Acting Police Chief Jeff Carroll remarked: 👉 “This is an especially brutal case.” Recently, authorities also released video of a suspect who murdered a millionaire philanthropist in the vicinity of Washington DC to bring the perpetrator to justice.

The case is currently being prosecuted in the DC Superior Court.
