A “shelter-in-place” order has been issued in the Sabine Pass area of Texas following a massive explosion that created a fireball at the Valero refinery in Port Arthur.
Initial reports indicate the incident occurred inside the Valero Energy facility shortly after a $300 billion new refinery project in Texas was announced. Sources at the scene stated the explosion involved a heater in the alkylation unit—a critical processing area in fuel production.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Zena Stephens confirmed that no serious injuries have been reported as of yet.
Some refinery workers have not yet been able to contact their families, leading to increased concern in the local community, especially as Governor Abbott recently ordered enhanced security in Texas.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and Valero have been contacted; however, there has been no official response regarding the cause of the explosion, reminiscent of the previous incident involving a loud explosion and strange lights in Houston.
Local officials stated there are no signs of dangerous toxic gas spreading to residential areas, but the shelter-in-place order remains in effect to ensure safety and avoid the risk of toxic black rain causing environmental pollution.
The situation continues to be monitored and updated.
