Responding to Domestic Violence Call, Witness Claims Child Thrown in Trash Can

Three officers opened fire on the afternoon of February 22 while responding to a domestic violence call at an apartment on Emerald Drive, Savannah. The suspect, Malik Hendrix, 23, was shot multiple times. The object in his hand was a cell phone, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

Savannah Police received a 911 call around 2:45 PM from a woman who reported being chased out of her apartment by a man. A witness claimed to have seen a child thrown into a trash can during the altercation. The child was taken to the hospital for examination and treatment; no officers were injured.

Suspect Pulled Object from Jacket, Three Officers Opened Fire Simultaneously

According to preliminary investigations, after law enforcement completed their scene assessment, Hendrix approached and asked if the police were looking for him. He then reached into his jacket. Officers ordered him to show his hands, but Hendrix did not comply, instead pulling an object and pointing it toward the police. Three officers opened fire. A police K-9 unit was deployed, causing further injury to the suspect.

GBI Cooperates with Investigation, Case File Forwarded to Prosecutor for Review

Hendrix was transported to a local hospital. His condition has not yet been released. The Savannah Police Department is cooperating with the GBI in the investigation. The case file will be forwarded to the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review upon completion of the investigation.
